Art Boarding Schools Nurture The Artist Within

Would you like to be an artist? And before you ask, the answer is "No." This isn't one of those draw me ads that used to be found in the backs of magazines and comic books. The learn-at-home art schools continue to teach students, but what if you could forego normal high school and go to a boarding school focused on art?

If you've never looked into art school before, you may be pleased to discover that they are more versatile than ever. Art schools today do not just focus on drawing and painting. Many of these boarding schools teach media arts, culinary arts, fabric art, and fashion design. The increasing popularity of video games has made media art hot. Game design can be very lucrative and many young people have made a lot of money doing it. They used to be referred to as geeks, now they're rich geeks.

Art-related boarding schools specialize in helping students in their artistic pursuits, yet academics are focused on as well. You need to demonstrate proficiency in normal subjects as well as your chosen art form. College preparatory curriculum prevails.

One advantage of these types of schools is that class size is almost always smaller than in a traditional school which allows for more individual attention. The faculty typically works in the field they teach. This will help the student to see their own possibilities upon graduation.

As far as housing goes, it is much like what you would find with a small college. Dormitory facilities are generally staffed by a house mother and/or several other employees. The dorms often have a large common area, studio space, and laundry facilities. Meals are also available on campus.

If you are a student with a passion for art (or you are the parent of one), an art school can provide the freedom to pursue this interest while obtaining a high-quality education. College and career counseling is offered to help the students with next steps.

One advantage you may not have considered is how being in this type of environment at this stage in life can impact a future career. Being with other students of like minds fosters creativity and many schools regularly have activities that allow students to display their work. Students also get valuable experience working with others in their chosen field.

For parents who are unsure if this is the best choice for their child, these schools are happy to have you visit. You can tour the school, have your questions answered, and explore your financing options. Costs vary, but almost every school has scholarship and grant programs. There may also be work/study opportunities.

Mom and Dad, don't say no without at least looking into this option. You may just find that an art boarding school is the perfect choice for your artist-in-training.
