I Want To Be A Rock Star
That is not music to many parents' ears. Yes, their kids have been banging on pots and pans and singing since they were young. Most parents, while proud of their children, have serious doubts about the pursuit of a music career. Enrolling in a boarding school that focuses on music may help the student to see if they can really accomplish their dreams.
These boarding schools focus on the performing arts. Many great talents today got their start at The High School of Performing Arts. Notable alumni include Janice Ian, Carol Bayer Sager, Irene Cara, and Tenacious D. That's quite a variety. The hit movie, Fame, was loosely based on the high school as well. As a fan of the movie and the television series, I have to say, it looked like a lot of fun.
While the fun aspect appeals to many potential students, parents can rest assured that academics are equally important. Talent is important to obtain admission, but grades must also factor in. Students who are talented, but whose grades are subpar are often advised to get the grades up and try again. Now that's music to the parents' ears.
Some music boarding schools are high school only, while others start at the elementary school level. For the serious music student, these schools are a dream come true. They can get an education and prepare for college while pursuing their interest in music. They will be in a creative environment and taught by professional musicians in many cases.
Dormitories are similar to college dorms, but have practice rooms in addition to the usual common room. Many activities are planned so the students can showcase their talents.
Studies will include normal academic studies as well as music history, theory and composition to name a few. Musical theater courses are also offered as well as dance.
Some music boarding schools just offer music, but most focus on all of the performing arts. It's a great start for your budding star.
